I love this song but the whole time I was thinking what on earth possesed her to wear this black and white lady bug outfit exposing everything about her beautiful pregnant figure. Her due date was last night and she admitts to being worried that her bouncy performance may induce labor. Luckily, the performance was fantastic!

MANY FIRE STATIONS HAVE SIGNS POSTED THAT they will accept certain items that can be dropped off by the public. These range from jugs of pesticide to toy donations and even unwanted babies in some areas.

But one woman in Calgary, Alberta, didn’t quite follow the rules when she dropped off a live hand grenade yesterday. She was doing some cleaning out of a rental property that she owns when she came across the grenade. Instead of calling for help, she just picked it up and took to the firehouse. The engine crew was out at the time, but they came right back when they were notified by the medic crew about the donation.

For the next 90 minutes the street was closed, the firehouse was in lockdown and the neighborhood was evacuated while the bomb squad transferred the device into a sandbox. It was later determined that it was a “live fuse, dead grenade” which is normally used in training.

As moms in this day and age, we are bombarded daily with media about the safety of the things we are eating, using, cleaning with, etc… Studies are popping up constantly linking potential toxins in our foods and products we use daily as being the causes of the rise in cases all sorts of diseases, especially affecting our children. It can become very overwhelming and scary quite frankly…

…Wait, it gets better, or worse really… a recent study conducted by EWG found over 200 common household toxic chemicals from cleaning products and beauty products found in babies placenta at birth. This is scary. So we know to watch what we eat while pregnant, but now it’s even more than that, now it’s also what we use on our bodies and the products we use when we are going through that inevitable nesting thing we do towards the end when we have that overwhelming desire to scrub everything in sight senseless and re-organize all the closets. Our babies are polluted before we even start wiping their bottoms with toxic baby wipes.

Raina was honored for being the last baby born in the old building, while Ellise was the first to be born in the new one.

Ellise’s mother, Rebecca Roy of L’Anse, broke into tears when given her daughter’s bond, calling the experience overwhelming. She gave birth Saturday.

Rita Martin of Iron Mountain, who gave birth last Wednesday, said she hoped Raina would be a good student and make productive use of her gift.

The bonds will mature when the girls turn 18.

Get knitting – and save a newborn baby’s life

Aug 7 2008 by Gary Marsh, Cynon Valley Leader

CYNON Valley MP Ann Clwyd MP is encouraging people in the Cynon Valley to get their knitting needles out.

She wants people to support Save the Children’s ‘Knit One, Save One’ campaign.

The charity wants the public to knit a hat for a newborn baby and to write to Prime Minister Gordon Brown calling on him make saving children’s lives in low income countries a priority.

“Lowering child mortality requires a raft of different measures including provision of emergency relief, immunisation, aid and education,” said Ms Clwyd.

“But it is great to know that something as simple as knitting a hat can help a child survive.

“I hope people in the Cynon Valley will take part and knit a hat for a child in the developing world.”

Pneumonia still kills a staggering two-million children each year.

Newborn babies are particularly vulnerable as they cannot control their body temperature.

It takes just two minutes for a wet, newborn baby to lose a dangerous two degrees in body temperature.

Most of this vital heat is lost through the soft spots on a baby’s head so a woolly hat can mean the difference between life and death.

Knit One, Save One is part of the Save the Children’s child survival campaign which aims to get 10m people to take action by 2010 for the 10m children that die each year.

To get involved, call Save the Children on 0207 012 6705 or visit www.savethechildren.org.uk/knitting

Screening newborn babies gives parents peace of mind. But when one local couple’s baby tested positive for a disorder, they say they were crushed at first- but happy to know how to treat their child right away.Eileen Quinlan, Olivia’s Mom
“February 1st, 2005. Perfect delivery, everything was easy, great.”

Olivia Quinlan came into the world without a problem, but just 5 days later, her parents got some bad news.

Eileen Quinlan, Olivia’s Mom
“I just got this message from an on-call physician that I’ve never met that said ‘Give us a call, there’s something wrong with the baby and it’s urgent that you call.’”

Olivia was tested for a range of different metabolic disorders- some of the tests are required by law- others are optional.

The Quinlan’s opted for additional testing, and that’s how they found the disorder.

Olivia was diagnosed with a rare metabolic disorder that prevents her body from digesting protein.

Dr. Deborah Marsden, Children’s Hospital Boston
“About 1 in 5000 infants now is affected by some inborn error of metabolism, and if these disorders as a general rule can be picked up in the newborn period before the infant becomes symptomatic then the outcomes are much better.”

Even though the news was tough to take, Olivia’s parents say they’re lucky they had the extra tests done and caught her condition right away.

Dan Quinlan, Olivia’s Dad
“The newborn screening got us right onto the fast track of treatment and really bypassing any kind of misdiagnosis.”

Olivia was put on a strict low-protein diet, and she’s doing great.

Eileen Quinlan, Olivia’s Mom
“We’re thankful that we were able to have a test, it is treatable, she will grow up and do all the other kids are going to do, but you just have to know to be able to treat it.”

Right now the additional tests are part of a pilot study and that’s why they’re not yet required by law.

A newborn baby has been found abandoned in a hospital in North Lanarkshire.

The boy has been named Andrew after the security guard who found him at Wishaw General Hospital on Tuesday and is said to be in good health.

Strathclyde Police said they were concerned for the health of the boy’s mother and urged her to get in touch.

A spokesman appealed for the woman, or anyone who has any information on the baby’s identity, to contact their local police station.

The baby, who is thought to only be a day or two old, was named after security guard Andrew Watson, who discovered him at about 2215 BST in a baby changing room.

Mr Watson, 25, said he had been making his final checks of the evening when he was alerted by the baby’s crying.

“He was in a babygro, wrapped in a white shawl and he certainly had a healthy set of lungs,” he said.

“So I picked him up and I phoned my colleague and we took him to maternity and then to casualty.

“My main concern was for the kid and I was anxious for him. It’s very touching to have a baby named after you but I don’t mind if they change it if the mother comes forward and they can be reunited.

“I’ve been to see him but I don’t want to keep bothering the neonatal ward. He’s a wee beauty and I hope it all works out.”

The baby, who weighed 9lbs 7.5oz, was given a clean bill of health, fed and taken to be cared for in the maternity ward.

He was sleeping peacefully in his cot on Wednesday afternoon with a teddy beside him.

Midwives and nursing staff have already grown attached to the youngster.

Dr Sam Ibhanesebhor, a consultant neonatologist, said: “He is sleeping peacefully and has been very settled. He is being bottle fed with formula and we reckon he is two days old.

“We are giving him antibiotics as we don’t know the condition of his birth or how his umbilical chord was cut but part of it is still attached.

“He is being cared for in our neonatal unit and has already won the hearts of everyone caring for him and they are growing more attached by the hour.”

Police have been carrying out extensive inquiries to trace the boy’s mother as they fear she may need urgent medical attention.

Supt Greig Robertson, of Wishaw police, said: “I would appeal to the mother to come forward as soon as possible. She needs help and assistance and there are people who can provide her with the support that she may need.”

He added: “If she doesn’t want to involve the police then she should attend at a doctor’s surgery or a hospital for medical attention.

“It may be that the mother is a teenager who is frightened and needs help. I would stress that we will not be passing judgement but just need to ensure she is safe.”

Supt Robertson also urged anyone who knew the mother to encourage her to immediately seek medical attention.

He said: “I would also appeal to anyone who was visiting Wishaw Hospital last night, had used the baby changing room, or was in the proximity of the hospital and saw a female with a baby, perhaps behaving in a suspicious manner, to contact the police.”
