Baby Blankets difference between baptism, christening, and dedication
Baby Blankie

Baby Gifts

The term “Baptism” and “Christening” are used interchangeably by most churches. Today, there’s really no difference between the two. Though, back in the day, the term Christening referred to the ceremony where a child was given a Christian name. Now, both typically mean “Baptism.” If you’re really worried about it, ask the parents (or if you are the parents, call the church and ask the secretary).

the role of the godparent

This may be the least understood role out there. If you’re reading this because you’ve been asked to be a Godparent and have no idea what’s expected of you: have no fear. Many parents often have few expectations from the Godparents apart from standing with them at the alter and supporting them throughout the time of the Baptism. Traditionally, the Godparent’s role is to assist in the child’s religious development. Sounds complicated, but some basic roles include praying for the child, leading a Christian life as a role model, and helping the child’s faith grow.

This may seem like a huge undertaking, but the good news is that the Godparent is neither a legal guardian nor the “eternal gift giver.” So, while we’d love for you to buy your Godchild a personalized Baby Blanket every six months – we’ll be honest – it’s neither typical nor expected.

dress code

This is a tough one since churches are so diverse in what they consider “Sunday Best.” However, even if the church is fairly informal, Baptisms are considered a special occasion. If you’re comfortable doing so, just ask the parents what they’ll be wearing. But, especially if you’re a guest in the church, it’s much better to be slightly overdressed than slightly underdressed as you’ll most likely be standing in front of the entire church.

The baby traditionally wears a Christening gown and wrapped in a white Baptism Blanket and is still common practice in many churches. Yet, if the church is less formal and isn’t traditional for a baby to wear a Christening gown, anything white will work. If you’re going to wrap the baby in one of our Personalized Baby Blankets, a white Baptism Blanket is traditional, but almost any thread color is appropriate. Silver thread may be considered most subtle.

the perfect baptism gift

This is our specialty ;o) It’s very common for parents, godparents, or other friends/family to commemorate this special day with a personalized gift as their Baptism gift. And, gifts are typically welcomed by the parents from guests, but it’s the Godparents who are typically in the hot seat.

Traditionally, Godparents give a baptism gift which will be treasured and remembered. Baptism gifts are seen as something that can become an heirloom rather than something fun and playful. But, the most special presents are loved, used, and seen day after day instead of tucked away for safe keeping (i.e. love your Miss Sonya’s personalized Baby Blanket – they love you).

Many Baptism and Dedication gifts are personalized to remember the day, or have a religious phrase or quote. If you do purchase a blankie, white or ivory Baby Blankets are traditionally “safe” baptism colors. A safe color for the text is silver, but let’s be honest; it’s not the most thrilling combination (but still looks good if that’s what you need to do). If you want to add a little personality to the Personalized Baby Blanket, don’t be afraid to use a pastel thread color. Less traditional ceremonies, though, may have no problem with a Baby Blankie with some color. So, figure out what kind of ceremony this will be and check with the parents if you’re unsure.
